Inquiry by Design - IBD
The Company:
Inquiry By Design is a curriculum and professional learning company that is committed to student-centered literacy and language learning marked by the reading, writing about, and discussion of content-rich, complex texts. They firmly believe that all students deserve—and even crave—real, meaningful, and relevant work. Hence, their motto: No fake work. Their curriculum is based on this premise and designed as an alternative to traditional textbooks and worksheet-based activities so prevalent in classrooms.
The Challenge
IBD’s dynamic English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum is Common Core-aligned. As states move back to State level standards, IBD needed support in re-aligning its curriculum to meet the needs of their school district clients. In addition to this, IBD wanted to help their clients understand how and to what extent their curriculum addressed each specific ELA standard in grades 6-12.
Our Role
RYE’s team got to work creating a scope of work to address IBD’s concerns. RYE’s action plan included creating a crosswalk to compare Common Core standards and state level standards, reviewing and realigning curriculum, and developing at-a-glances for each state to convey how IBD meets their particular standards.

Our Approach
A collaborative approach with the client, multiple check-ins to ensure we were working toward their satisfaction with the final product
Created a comparison crosswalk between Common Core Standards and individual state-level standards
Analyzed IBD ELA lessons to align with state standards
Developed tables for each state to help clients visualize how IBD’s curriculum meets each standard
Our Result
RYE’s support has resulted in a comprehensive and current package of aligned ELA curriculum that is appealing to districts in the focus states.
